Greetings. My name is Sir William du Lac, son of Sylvain du Lac, son of King Ban of Benwick. My mother died when I was born, and my father when I was two.

My uncle, Sir Lancelot, took over the guardianship of me. I have lived in Camelot ever since, and have never seen my supposed “homeland” of France.

I have been taught the tenets of chivalry and knighthood ever since I was young enough to understand them, and I try to live up to them as best as I can. Sometimes I worry, though, that I think too much to make a truly good knight. The lines of King Ban and King Bors – my grandfather and great-uncle – have produced many outstanding knights, and none of my other relatives seem as preoccupied with the difficulties of any course of action as I do. They don’t even seem to notice most of the difficulties, to be honest. But I swear that I will uphold the du Lac name to the best of my ability, and I will not fail in my honor, though it kills me for trying. At least fighting – swordplay, jousting – comes easily to me.

My best friend is Thomas Pendragon, son of the King and the Lady Alison. We’re opposites, to be true, but some – like the Queen, once – say that we balance each other out. The King just says that we manage to get into more trouble doubly than either of us could ever manage on our own, but I think Tom would get into trouble no matter who he was with. He has too much of a taste for adventure to ever sit still.

You asked about—l-ladies? Well—there isn’t one—not for me. Not right now. The young maids of the castle—well—I look very much like my Uncle Lance—and they think him to be quite—quite—never mind. There is one maid who I would … like to be—but she wouldn’t. She’s my superior in rank, even if she’s not legitimate, and … well, she wouldn’t. I don’t think …

But, as I said before, I am a knight in name and I try to be a knight in deed. A knight always defends the innocent, no matter what the consequences to himself. No matter who he offends.

I just pray he won’t hurt any more innocents …
