Oh—h-hullo. Greetings. My name is Gwendolyn de Ganis, daughter of Elaine, daughter of King Brandegoris. I’m a—a bastard, but my father is Sir Bors de Ganis, son of King Bors of Gannes. My grandfather (maternal) generously took care of me until I was eight (nearly nine), but then my mother died and he decided that my father had better take charge of me. That was when I came to Camelot. My father was on the Grail Quest, and the King and Queen kindly took charge of me for the duration.

What sort of things do I like to do? Well, I am one of the Queen’s ladies. Tommy—oh, Sir Thomas Pendragon, of course!—graciously secured that appointment for me. He’s the King’s son, and thus the Queen’s … well, stepson, I suppose, though he also is illegitimate. So I spend much of my days in helping her and her other ladies. I also go to Mass often, and pray often. I … well, I do like to work with numbers and figures. Sometimes I try to help Father when he’s having trouble with money, but I have to be careful. He would be upset if the thought I was being prideful and trying to best him at ciphering.

My—my friends? Oh … I do have a few. Lady Jessica Pendragon, Duchess of Carleon, for one. She’s the King’s daughter (illegitimate too) and Tom—Sir Thomas’s sister. They’re twins. And there is Lady Bridget of Kent. Lady Jessica’s friend, Lady Danielle, is also something of a friend … though don’t tell my father that. You see, Lady Danielle is a bit … odd. He would be upset if he knew I had befriended someone like that.

A—a what? Boyfriend? I do have some boys—young men—who are friends. Sort of. My cousin – second cousin – Sir William, for one, and my other cousins Sir Corentin and his brother Squire Rainier. And there is Sir Thomas Pendragon … he’s … well, he’s wonderful—I mean—he befriended me when we were children. There’s nothing more than a slight friendship now. Truly! My father would be furious if he thought I was being—promiscuous—and a maiden has to be careful about her reputation, else none will marry her. Particularly if she is a bastard. The summer of my sixteenth year? Oh, that was … frightening … Sir Mordred, the heir apparent, Sir Thomas and Lady Jessica’s older brother, he—he—I don’t want to talk about it. He was so cruel, to everyone, he tried to kill us all …

I don’t ever want to live through another year like that … though … I suppose I did come out the better for it.
